Septic rules in Brazoria County
Brazoria County won't issue a building permit until the septic permit is in place, and the system can't go in before then either, according to the Environmental Health permitting page as of July 2026. Applications go in person or by mail, not by email. At least two Designated Representatives review each one, and the fee isn't due until the packet has been reviewed and approved. An existing system that never had a permit can't be permitted after the fact.
Installers and maintenance providers have to be registered with the county. The county repeats the state's 10-acre exemption. A system serving one single-family dwelling, the only dwelling on a tract of ten acres or larger, needs no planning materials, permit or inspection if every part sits at least 100 feet inside the property lines. The page doesn't print a permit amount. Ask Environmental Health for it when you mail the packet.
The county's rules, line by line
- Who permits septic systems
- Brazoria County Environmental Health (OSSF Permitting Process page).
- Inspection at sale
- No rule found in the county's published code. The county's septic pages state no inspection rule for a sale or transfer.
- Permit steps
- An OSSF permit is required before installation and before a building permit. Applications are submitted in person or by mail (not email); at least two Designated Representatives review each application; fees are due only after the packet is reviewed and approved. An existing OSSF without a permit cannot be retroactively permitted.
- Installers and evaluators
- Installers and maintenance providers must be registered with the county.
- Still to confirm with the county
- The county repeats the 10-acre exemption: no planning materials, permit or inspection for an OSSF serving a single family dwelling on a single tract of ten acres or larger, with all parts at least 100 feet inside the property boundaries and the only dwelling on the tract. The page prints no permit fee.
Rules and fees change every year, so confirm a line with Brazoria County Environmental Health before you rely on it. "No rule found" means the pages and code we have say nothing on that line, which isn't the same as the county telling you there's no rule. To compare counties, use the county rules lookup.
