The 72-hour report for lids and risers
TCEQ's permit page names tank lids and risers in its list of emergency repairs, along with inlet and outlet devices, disinfection devices, damaged drip tubing and solid lines. Those need no permit. The report goes in writing to the permitting authority within 72 hours after the work has begun, under 30 TAC 285.35 as the page cites it, so keep a copy of what you send.
Riser costs in Texas: our range
Our model puts a riser at $150 to $405 per riser installed, an estimate, not a quote. It comes from one national range and the Texas septic servicer wage ratio, and we counted no Texas company riser prices.
The pay row below shows what the work pays a servicer, which isn't what it costs you.
| Item | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated range, not a quote | $150 to $405 per riser installed | Built from one national published range, adjusted by the Texas septic tank servicer wage ratio (0.88). Eight Texas septic companies publish a price we could count on their own websites; where five or more price the same job, the range is the middle half of their prices, and where two to four do, the estimate is widened to take them in. Coupons, specials and figures a page gives as an average are not counted. Basis: no state company sample (no counted Texas company price for this job), national estimate only. |

Who may set a riser
An owner of a single-family home may work on his or her own system without an installer license under 30 TAC 30.244, as long as the property isn't being developed for sale or lease. Anyone the owner pays to build any part of it must be a licensed installer, so ask a company for its TCEQ installer class and number.
An open tank cannot wait
- The lid is cracked, broken or gone, leaving the tank open.
- The lid is intact, and you'd like a riser so the tank is easier to reach later.
Before the riser is set
- Locate the tank and measure how deep the lid sits.
- Ask the county office whether your job is an emergency repair or an alteration.
- Write down the date the work begins, so the 72-hour report is on time.
- Get the quote in writing, with the lid type.
Is a riser job permitted?
TCEQ's page treats lid and riser repairs as emergency work without a permit, with the written report as the condition. The page doesn't say whether adding a riser to a sound tank counts as a repair or an alteration, so ask the county permitting office before the work starts.
