Septic rules in Sarasota County
Sarasota County's Code of Ordinances, Chapter 54, Article VIII (Septic Tanks), requires a professional engineer to design every new septic construction permit and every modification of an existing system. The Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County issues those permits from its Sarasota location, 941-861-6133 (fax 941-526-1535), and its Venice office, 941-861-3310 (fax 941-526-1536). Installers and plumbers can pay construction fees online; no fee table is posted. Old permits are searchable too, in a department permit archive running from 1972 to the present.
Aerobic units, performance-based systems and systems on industrial or manufacturing-zoned land need an operating permit renewed every two years and a maintenance contract with an approved entity that services the system at least twice a year. The department reviews the records and inspects on site each year. North Port, Sarasota, Lakewood Ranch and the county's other places over 10,000 people, 10 in all, hold 295,653 residents, fewer than the whole county.
The Sarasota County Special Utility District serves 272,267 people with purchased surface water and North Port Utilities 61,163 with surface water, by EPA's count; septic isn't part of that count. A failing system is reported at 941-861-6613. The department treats those complaints as sanitary nuisances under chapter 386 of the Florida Statutes, issues a notice to abate, and takes legal action if the fix isn't made in the time given.

Rules and fees change every year, so confirm a line with the health department before you rely on it. "No rule found" means the pages and code we have say nothing on that line, which isn't the same as the county telling you there's no rule. To compare counties, use the county rules lookup.
