Who can dig up a drain field
On the owner-occupied single-family home you live in, you may repair the field yourself, though every permit still applies. Paid work goes to a registered septic tank contractor or a plumber state-licensed under section 489.105(3)(m), whose exemption covers the registration and nothing else.
A repair permit runs 90 days. DEP's fee rule lists $55 for it in the counties DEP permits, while Lee County lists $350 for a repair permit application and Hillsborough County $455 for a repair septic tank permit.
Drain field costs in Florida, with county repair fees beside them
The model puts a drain field repair at $675 to $4,550 per repair, an estimate, not a quote. One national range sets it, widened 15 percent each side and scaled by the Florida-to-US wage ratio for operating engineers, and there was no Florida company drain field price to count.
Replacing the field has its own row. County permit fees sit outside both figures.
| Item | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated range, not a quote | $675 to $4,550 per repair | Built from one national published range, adjusted by the Florida operating engineer wage ratio (0.79). Two Florida septic companies publish a price we could count on their own websites; where five or more price the same job, the range is the middle half of their prices, and where two to four do, the estimate is widened to take them in. Coupons, specials and figures a page gives as an average are not counted. Basis: no state company sample (no counted Florida company price for this job), national estimate only. |
| Estimated range for a full drain field replacement, not a quote | $2,025 to $13,700 per replacement | Built from one national published range, adjusted by the Florida operating engineer wage ratio (0.79). The room a repair has to find
Rule 62-6.005, in the full chapter 62-6 text on flrules.org, says unobstructed land of at least 1.5 times the drainfield absorption area has to stay free for repairs. The same text keeps a system at least 75 feet from a private potable well and from the boundaries of a surface water body, with exceptions, and fill has to settle 6 months or be compacted.
Older systems inside springs and lagoon areas
The 2025 springs basin management action plans carry remediation plans for conventional systems in the covered areas. Each such system has to meet nitrogen-reducing requirements, install another system that reaches at least 65 percent reduction, or connect to sewer no later than 20 years after the plan was adopted.
For the Indian River Lagoon Protection Program area, DEP's permitting page and its August 2026 table print July 1, 2030, while its February 2025 fact sheet prints January 1, 2030. Ask the county health department which date it works to.
Drain field signs that need a call today
- Sewage is pooling over the field or coming back up into the house.
- The soil above the field stays soggy and smells like sewage.
- Lush grass over the field while every drain works normally.
Before anyone digs
- Mark where the ground stays wet and the date you first noticed it.
- Ask to see the company's septic tank contractor registration or its plumbing license.
- Ask who orders the site evaluation and who submits the permit application.
- Ask the county health department what a repair permit costs there.
Permit for a drain field repair
Repairing or modifying the field needs a permit approved by the department before work starts. The application is Form DEP 4015 with a site plan and site evaluation, filed with the county health department or, in DEP counties, through DEP's portal.
Questions people ask
Who's allowed to work on a Florida drain field?
A registered contractor, a state-licensed plumber, or you on your own owner-occupied home. A plumber's exemption reaches only the registration, so permits and inspections still apply. So does every permit for an owner doing the work.
Does fixing a drain field take a permit in Florida?
Yes, a repair permit approved by the department, valid 90 days. DEP's fee rule lists $55 for the permit in the counties it permits, and a county health department elsewhere sets its own fee.
How much does a drain field repair cost in Florida?
The model range is $675 to $4,550 per repair, an estimate and not a quote. The permit is separate, and a replacement is priced in its own row of the table.
