What the pump, floats and panel do
A basic gravity system has no moving parts. Systems with a pump chamber, including the alternative systems EPA describes, have electrical float switches, a pump and a control panel. A float rides on the liquid level, and the panel uses it to start the pump and to raise the alarm when the level is wrong. EPA says alternative systems with floats, pumps or mechanical parts should generally be inspected once a year and recommends a service contract. EGLE's own yearly checklist for owners includes testing the control panel's alarm and pump.
Pump and float costs in Michigan: what the table shows
A float switch comes to $85 to $345 per float switch in our model, and replacing a pump to $425 to $1,725 per pump replacement. Both are estimates, not quotes. The pump figure is our interpretation of a national range that gives a band for minor repairs and no price for a pump alone. The table also holds the servicer wage.
| Item | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated range, not a quote | $85 to $345 per float switch | Built from one national published range, adjusted by the Michigan septic tank servicer median wage ratio (1.00). No Michigan septic company published a range we could count. |
| Estimated range for a pump replacement, not a quote | $425 to $1,725 per pump replacement | Built from one national published range, adjusted by the Michigan septic tank servicer median wage ratio (1.00). No Michigan septic company published a range we could count. |
| Septic tank servicer wage, Michigan mean | $24.85 an hour | What Michigan septic tank servicers are paid (BLS, May 2025, statewide), not what you are charged. |
How we estimate costs: the Estimated range row is a model, not a quote. It takes one published national range for this job (a cost guide from a third-party site that we have not verified and do not cite) and multiplies it by Michigan's septic tank servicer median wage ratio to the US (1.00, BLS 2025 data). No permit or evaluation fee is added: the county rows are shown as the schedules print them. The wage and fee rows are what workers are paid and what a county charges, and neither is a price you will be quoted. We have not collected Michigan septic quotes, and one company's published pumping price is not a range. Your tank, soil and site move a real quote outside any range, so get written quotes. How long they last, and what that means for a Michigan tank
EPA puts the life of pumps and controls at 10 to 20 years, and says a concrete tank may last 50 years or more. EGLE gives a conventional system 25 to 40 years and says its electronic components wear out sooner. A house with a pumped system can therefore be on its second pump while the tank is original. Ask the seller or the county file for the date of the last pump replacement.
Alarm and dose tank rules: state minimums and county permits
The state's Criteria for Subsurface Sewage Disposal require at least a visual alarm on raw sewage lift pumps and strongly recommend an audible one too. They also require a dosing tank where the design flow exceeds 2,000 gallons a day. EGLE's loan program requires dose tanks to be sized for pump submergence, dose volume, drain-back volume and emergency storage, but that binds only loan-funded work.
Counties add their own rules for alternative systems. Oakland County requires an annual operation permit for engineered systems with pretreatment, with maintenance reports within 30 days of service. Livingston County also issues annual operating permits that do not transfer to a new owner. Ask about both before you buy a house with a pumped system.
A flooded pump chamber is an electrical hazard
EGLE says to shut off the electricity to a flooded pump chamber and to have a licensed professional inspect the electrical connections, pumps and alarms before power is restored. Do not pump the tank until the groundwater has dropped.
When an alarm means call now
- The alarm is sounding and sewage is backing up, or water is surfacing over the field.
- The chamber or panel has been underwater: keep the power off.
- A routine test of the panel at your yearly inspection.
- A pump you know is past 10 years old and still working: plan the replacement.
Before you call
- Read the panel label and note which light or tone is active, and when it started.
- Check whether the breaker feeding the panel has tripped, without opening the panel.
- Find the date of the last service and the installer's name in the county file or your closing papers.
- Do not open the pump chamber: EGLE warns about dangerous gases and electric shock.
Permit questions for a pump or float swap
Permit rules for a pump or float swap are local. This answer combines two sources, so confirm with the county: the Criteria require a permit before a sewage system is built, and each county decides what minor repair work falls under it. Ask your county health department before the work, and check if your system has an operating permit.
A tool for this job
Septic failure signs and drain field care
Pick the symptom that fits best and say when the tank was last pumped. The tool uses EGLE's definition of a failed system and EPA's guidance to say if you should call your county health department first or book an inspection, and it ends with drain field care that applies either way. It is a guide to the likely next step, not a diagnosis.

What does a septic alarm mean?
It means the control panel has flagged a condition, and the cause depends on your panel. The state requires at least a visual alarm on raw sewage lift pumps, and EGLE's yearly inspection tests the alarm and pump. Read the panel label, then call a septic company or your county health department.
How long does a septic pump last?
EPA says pumps and controls often need replacement every 10 to 20 years. EGLE adds that electronic components have a shorter expected life than the tank and drain field.
What is the average cost of a septic pump?
Our estimate for replacing a pump is $425 to $1,725 per pump replacement, and for a float switch $85 to $345 per float switch. Both are models, not quotes, and the pump figure rests on one national range for minor repairs, so treat it as loose. The $24.85 an hour mean for Michigan septic tank servicers is pay, not a charge. Get written quotes with parts and labor listed.
Should I turn the power off after a flood?
Yes: EGLE says to shut off electricity to a flooded pump chamber. A licensed professional should inspect the connections, pumps and alarms before power is restored.
How often should the pump and alarm be tested?
EGLE includes alarm and pump testing in a yearly inspection. EPA says alternative systems with floats, pumps or mechanical parts should generally be inspected once a year.
